Frequently asked questions.

Which audio interfaces are supported?

Any standard macOS audio interface: Focusrite, PreSonus, MOTU, Apogee, RME, Universal Audio, SSL, Audient, Behringer… The Mac's microphone is enough for the tuner; for the amp, an instrument input is recommended.

Do I need to know a lot of music theory?

No. Beginners find simple scales and fingerings, advanced players find modes, harmony and scales from all over the world. Every scale has its own sheet: description, tip, chords and styles.

Can I use my Audio Units plugins?

Yes. UnitBasse doesn't include any plugins: it loads the ones you already own and have installed on your Mac, on top of its 22 built-in effects.

Does BackTrack record what I play?

No. BackTrack is your practice partner, not a studio: it plays along with you, without recording anything. Pick a chord chart and a style, set the tempo and the key, and practice your lines on a loop for as long as you like. You can also write your own bass line in Scores and hear it played over the chart, with the whole band.

Can I open my Guitar Pro files?

Yes. Scores opens Guitar Pro files (versions 3 to 8) and MusicXML. You pick the bass track to import, and you can keep the drums as a reference to play along with. Files locked by their publisher can't be opened.

Intel Mac or Apple Silicon?

Both, on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.

How is it different from UnitBasse for iPad?

Scales, tuner and metronome are the same. The Mac adds Scores, BackTrack, the 22-effect pedalboard, your Audio Units plugins, sound presets, audio interface selection and keyboard shortcuts. The two apps are sold separately.

Why a one-time purchase and not a subscription?

Because UnitBasse is a tool, not a service. Buy it once, use it forever.

Real musicians
The drums are played by a drummer, then replayed at every tempo, never stretched. Piano, vibraphone, percussion, brass and strings are recorded instruments, and the guitar is recorded note by note.
A band that listens
The bass locks to the drummer's kick, keys and guitar follow its accents and hold the chord through its breaks, and the chorus sounds fuller than the verse.
16 styles, 131 charts
Rock, blues, funk, bossa nova, jazz swing, disco, Motown soul, pop ballad, neo soul, hip-hop, punk, metal, cha-cha, country, reggae and samba.
The drummer
31 grooves to choose from depending on the style: swing, brushes, one drop, double kick, half-time… And another take in one click.
Keys and guitar
Piano, vibraphone, organ, synth, clav, electric piano or sequenced synth, in chords, arpeggios or sequences. The guitar in open chords, palm-muted or arpeggiated, and distorted in power chords.
Brass and strings
Four brass line-ups, in punctuations, riffs or phrases. Violins, violas and cellos as pads or pizzicato.
Percussion
Nine instruments, from shaker to congas, played by the style's percussionist, sparse or full.
Schools
Each instrument plays in the manner of a city or a genre: 11 keys schools, 8 guitar schools, 6 brass schools.
The room
Six rooms, from a dry room to a cathedral, and how much each instrument sends to it.
Your own chart
Chords, sections, repeats and song structure, with each section's intensity, instruments and drum feel. Import a chart as text or from iReal Pro, export it as a UnitBasse file or as text.
The bass
Root, arpeggio, neck scale, style line, full line or your own line written in Scores. Muted by default: you're the one playing.
On the fretboard
The current chord and the next one, with the scale to play over it.
Without stopping
Change the chart, key, tempo or style without stopping playback, restart from any bar on the timeline, or pick up where you stopped.
